The Minnesota Timberwolves are coming off their most successful season in well over a decade reaching the playoffs for the first time in 14 years. However, the franchise is now faced with some potentially pressing roster decision in order to take the next step forward in the upcoming campaign.
One of which appears to be surrounding the possibility of bringing back former All-Star point guard Derrick Rose on a new deal. According to Sean Deveney of Sporting News, the Timberwolves appear to be leaning toward re-signing Rose in the coming weeks in free agency.
This decision appears to be hinging on what Minnesota plans to do with the fourth-year guard Tyus Jones this offseason as he enters the final year of his four-year rookie deal. What has also compounded this situation is that Jones is reportedly contemplating requesting a trade this summer.
The 22-year-old's role off the bench had become significantly reduced after the arrival of Rose this past season that saw him become the leading ball handler and scoring option as a reserve. This uncertainty around Jones should likely result in him looking to play elsewhere to reboot his career.
In his limited time with the Timberwolves, Rose was a spark plug off the bench showing his ability to get to the rim while playmake with the primary role as the orchestrator of the offense for the second unit. He was particularly a huge scoring asset in the playoffs in the first-round series in the five games played against the Houston Rockets averaging 14.2 points on 50.9 percent from the field and 70 percent from 3-point range.
