The New York Yankees have been the best team in baseball over the MLB season's first month and a half. They are pitching, hitting and winning ball games. Finding any real weakness on this team is difficult. However, one position they are not especially deep at is catcher.

The Yankees primary backstop is Kyle Higashioka. Jose Trevino has done a great job as his backup. Higashioka took over main catching duties after New York traded Gary Sanchez to the Twins during the offseason.

But the Yankees could be willing to make an upgrade at the position as the season progresses.

The Chicago Cubs are expected to be sellers at the trade deadline. Chicago dealt Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, and Javier Baez away at last year's trade deadline, and they very well could trade star catcher Wilson Contreras this year.

The Yankees were linked to Wilson Contreras during the offseason. Despite rumors of a potential deal, nothing ever came to fruition. But Jim Bowden of the Athletic believes Contreras is still a primary trade candidate on the Yankees radar.

“I’ll go with the bold prediction of Willson Contreras,” Bowden said in response to who he thinks will be the Yankees primary catcher by August. “I know Brian Cashman and Jed Hoyer are reading this, so please make it happen so I’m right. Haha.”

Contreras is one of the best offensive catchers in baseball. He offers pop from the right side of the plate and can handle his own on the defensive end.

This rumor could become a reality in the not-too-distant future.
