The Chicago White Sox have underperformed in 2022. They were not only the clear favorites in the AL Central, but many predicted that the White Sox would win the World Series this season. But Chicago currently sits in third place in AL Central with a record of under .500.

But they are just 5.5 games out of first place in the division. And Chicago has the talent to overcome the Guardians and Twins. They are slowly getting back to full health and should be able to make some kind of run. The odds of them selling at the deadline are slim. However, a case can be made for the White Sox selling at the deadline.

But assuming they are buyers, what players should they add ahead of the 2022 MLB trade deadline.

3 top targets for White Sox ahead of 2022 MLB trade deadline

Frankie Montas

Frankie Montas of the Oakland Athletics is enjoying a superb 2022 campaign. He has produced a quality 3.26 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and 100 strikeouts. He also has held opponents to a .226 batting average.

However, Frankie Montas did leave his most recent start with an injury. He is slated for an MRI soon which will determine his status moving forward. But Oakland is hopeful Montas avoided anything serious since he is expected to arguably be the most coveted trade candidate ahead of the deadline.

Assuming he avoids a long-term injury, the White Sox will inquire about him. They were originally linked to both Frankie Montas and Sean Manaea prior to the season. Manaea was ultimately dealt to the Padres but Oakland opted to hold onto Montas. So now is the time to strike for Chicago.

The White Sox pitching rotation has let them down. Lucas Giolito and Lance Lynn have looked like shells of their former selves. Dylan Cease has been terrific, but adding a pitcher or two is necessary at this point.

Ian Happ

The White Sox and Cubs have made a couple of deals in recent years. So they may be open to discussing a deal centered around outfielder Ian Happ.

Happ was once considered one of the top prospects in the Cubs organization. But his rise to stardom was far from a quick one. He blasted 25 home runs in 2021, but hit just .226 with a .323 OBP. But he is reaching new heights so far in 2022.

Happ is slashing an impressive .283/.381/.460 with 8 home runs and 5 stolen bases this season. He would be a welcomed addition for a White Sox' offense that has labored. Happ is versatile as well. He has experience in the outfield and at second and third base. So Chicago could utilize him as they please.

Mitch Haniger

Mitch Haniger is currently on the injured list. But he is expected to return to the Mariners lineup at some point in July. The Mariners have struggled in 2022 but are nearing the .500 mark. So I wouldn't expect them to be sellers.

But Haniger could be a trade option nonetheless. Seattle may be ready to move on from the oft-injured outfielder. And the White Sox may get a trade discount given that Haniger has played all of 9 games in 2022.

But he is a player who produces at a star level when healthy. Haniger smashed 39 home runs and tallied 100 RBI's in 2021. So he could be a difference maker in the White Sox lineup this season. Chicago should inquire about the outfielder.
