The New York Jets were able to acquire veteran wide receiver Demaryius Thomas from the New England Patriots. Following the trade, head coach Adam Gase had nothing but compliments for his new wide receiver.

Per Manish Mehta in the New York Daily News:

“He looked good in that last preseason game that we watched,” Adam Gase said. “He seems like he’s in a good place. So, we’ll see how it goes. He knows the offense. He can easily be plugged in. He still remembers everything.”

“Smart. Versatile,” Gase said about Thomas. “Get the ball in his hands. He’s a big man that can run. He’s not 24 anymore. I’m not stupid in that aspect. I understand that there’s an aging process here. But he’s still a big man that can run really well for a guy his size.”

Due to the Patriots signing Antonio Brown, New England became overcrowded at the wide receiver position—hence why the Jets took a flier to see if Thomas was available from their AFC East foes.

For the Jets, they were in need of a viable receiver with the news that Quincy Enunwa will miss the rest of the season. Enunwa signed a four-year, $36 million extension with New York after the 2018 season concluded.

As for Thomas, the veteran wideout has had previous working experience with Gase in his career. Gase was the Denver Broncos wide receivers coach from 2009-12 and also became the offensive coordinator from 2013-14.

Thomas came into the league in 2010 with the Broncos and immediately became one of the NFL's best pass-catchers. As Gase alluded to, Thomas may not be as fast as he once was, but he can still be a crucial piece for the Jets offense.
