The season that Los Angeles Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani is having is something that quite literally just hasn't been seen in baseball before. The Babe Ruth comparisons have entered the chat but even the Babe didn't do some of the things Ohtani is doing this year.
On Wednesday, Ohtani clubbed his 40th home run of the season. He's the first in MLB to reach that mark this season. He did so in a game where he also tossed 8 innings of one-run ball for the Angels in their win over the Detroit Tigers.
Some have ceased trying to explain the historical aspects of this year for the Angels' two-way superstar.
Shohei Ohtani, tonight’s starting pitcher that allowed 1 run over 8 innings, just became the first MLB player this year to reach 40 home runs.
This has to be the single best season we’ve ever seen from an MLB player.https://t.co/VMV8fmEN1v

Half of Shohei Ohtani's 40 HR have been hit 110+ MPH.
He also tossed 8 innings in the game.

What Ohtani is doing is unfathomable in today's game yet, he's accomplishing it. He should be the runaway MVP winner in the American League and that's no disrespect to the magnificent year that Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is having. Ohtani is just on another galaxy with what he's doing.
There aren't many, if any, who would've predicted this coming to fruition with a starting pitcher also being a daily batter in the lineup card leading the way in home runs while getting batters to whiff at a high rate as well. It's exactly what has happened with the Angels and Ohtani.
His next mark this year will be 50 home runs and he should certainly reach that milestone as well. If he does so on a night that he's pitching for the Angels too, Twitter might not survive.
A tip of the cap to an unbelievable so far for Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Angels.
