Terry McLaurin may need to continue to play the waiting game on his contract situation with the Washington Commanders.

Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer noted that McLaurin’s contract dilemma with Commanders team officials has gone “nowhere.” Breer further added that negotiations between the two sides “haven’t really started.”

Even as multiple notable wideouts over the past months have signed off on multiyear extension agreements, the Commanders have yet to come to terms with McLaurin on such a deal.

McLaurin will play the 2022 season on the final year of his rookie deal, as he will hit free agency next year. He is set to earn a base salary of $2.8 million for the upcoming campaign.

The Commanders reportedly view an extension agreement with McLaurin as a “priority,” although it remains to be seen on whether the two sides will reach a deal before the start of the 2022 campaign.

From Commanders head coach Ron Rivera’s standpoint, he noted last month that the team would not entertain calls about trading McLaurin after three seasons. Rivera does see that there is “plenty of time” to find a resolution to this matter.

McLaurin reached 1,000 receiving yards for the second consecutive campaign over the 2021 regular season. He also tallied for 77 receptions and five receiving touchdowns as he led the way with the team’s wide receiver unit.

Overall, McLaurin heads into a crucial 2022 season, and it may take a while to see him back in action on the field. The versatile wideout is reportedly planning on reporting on time to the Commanders’ upcoming offseason programs, but he is not slated to feature in any “on-field work.”
