Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Randy Gregory is preparing to file for NFL reinstatement in 2020, according to David Moore of The Dallas Morning News.

Gregory is serving an indefinite suspension for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy and did not play at all in 2019.

The 27-year-old has been banned four times for the issue, with his most recent suspension coming in February 2019. He managed to play the entire 2018 campaign and was impressive, registering 25 tackles, six sacks, a couple of forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

Gregory, who played his collegiate football at the University of Nebraska, was originally selected by the Cowboys in the second round (60th pick overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft.

He played in 12 games during his rookie year, logging 11 tackles in a limited role.

Since then, Gregory has appeared in a grand total of 16 contests due to all of his suspensions and his missed two whole seasons (he also sat all of 2017) as a result.

While the league's new collective bargaining agreement has ended the policy of banning players for positive marijuana tests, it does not instantly reinstate players like Gregory who were suspended before the new deal was in place.

For that reason, Gregory will have to go through commissioner Roger Goodell in order to get back in to the NFL.

Dallas owner Jerry Jones has expressed his support for Gregory, but obviously, it's up to Goodell as to whether or not Gregory will be permitted to take the field next season.

The Cowboys went just 8-8 and missed the playoffs in 2019.
