The Indiana Fever bucked a slow start and took care of business against the Phoenix Mercury, 86-77, at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Monday. The Fever returned to the win column after a two-game skid.

Indiana only scored two three-pointers in the first quarter, as Phoenix led by as much as 16 points. The early deficit served as a wake-up call for the Fever, who turned it on and took control of the contest before completing the come-from-behind victory.

But it was not without controversy. In the fourth quarter, tensions flared between Sophie Cunningham and DeWanna Bonner. They got into a heated exchange, although it was Bonner who was doing most of the talking, while Cunningham was mocking her. They both were whistled for a technical foul.

Last season, Cunningham and Bonner were teammates on the Fever for a brief period. They both joined the team in the offseason, but Bonner only played nine games before demanding a trade due to her dissatisfaction with her role. After being waived by Indiana, the six-time All-Star returned to Phoenix, where she played from 2009 to 2019.

Cunningham, meanwhile, enjoyed a productive campaign before suffering a season-ending knee injury.

She had two points on two free throws and six rebounds in 26 minutes off the bench. She missed her five attempts from long distance.

Bonner, on the other hand, tallied seven points and three rebounds in 27 minutes off the bench.

The Fever improved to 10-7, while the Mercury dropped to 5-13.

Cunningham and Bonner might have a rematch on Wednesday, with the Fever and the Mercury facing off anew.
