The shockwaves of the Russian invasion of Ukraine have been felt throughout every corner of the globe, extending even to the sporting world. Formula 1, which currently features a Russian driver and hosts a race on Russian soil, has been no exception.

Four time Formula 1 champion Sebastian Vettel was vocal on potentially boycotting the Russian Grand Prix slated for September 25.

Via ESPN:

“For myself, my opinion is I should not go,” asserted Vettel. “I will not go. I'm just really shocked and sad to see what's going on. We will see going forward, but I think my decision is already made.”

Not long after, Formula 1 called off the race as a whole, releasing a statement that deemed it “impossible” to push through with the Russian Grand Prix given the current climate.

A statement said: “We are watching the developments in Ukraine with sadness and shock and hope for a swift and peaceful resolution to the present situation. On Thursday evening Formula 1, the FIA, and the teams discussed the position of our sport, and the conclusion is, including the view of all relevant stakeholders, that it is impossible to hold the Russian Grand Prix in the current circumstances.”

No word yet on what location would be used to replace the Russian Grand Prix.
