Tiger Woods was tuned in on to Augusta National on Sunday, as he witnessed Hideki Matsuyama emerge as the champion of the 2021 Masters.

Shortly after Matsuyama became the first Japanese player to win a golf major, Tiger Woods took to Twitter to congratulate the 29-year-old golfer.

Matsuyama finally earned his first-ever green jacket after besting Will Zalatoris. It was a close battle throughout, but Matsuyama shot a final round 73 and recorded a score of 10 under par to edge the American. Tiger Woods has stood in Matsuyama's shoes many times.

Tiger Woods has Chinese and Thai roots, so this win resonated for him on a personal level. Matsuyama knows how big this day was for his own career and then some. He was understandably overcome with emotions after his monumental win and described it as a historic day for his Japan's golf scene, per Ben Morse of CNN.

“I'm really happy. My nerves really didn't start on the second nine. It was right from the start today and right to the very last putt. I was thinking about (my family) all the way round today and I'm really happy I played well for them. Hopefully I'll be a pioneer and many other Japanese people will follow. I'm glad to be able to open the flood gates hopefully and many more will follow me.”

Tiger Woods knows a thing or two about winning Masters, as he conquered the tournament five times in his illustrious career. He sits second in all-time Masters wins, behind Jack Nicklaus who won it six times.

Tiger Woods is still recuperating from a shocking car crash he was involved in in LA last February. Investigators later deemed that excessive speed was the cause of the accident. Woods suffered orthopedic injuries to his right lower extremity and his golf future is uncertain at the moment.

But for now, Tiger Woods is just a willing spectator and is thrilled for Matsuyama's accomplishment.
