All-Pro running back Le'Veon Bell didn't play in 2018. He signed with the New York Jets following five seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers. It didn't go quite Bell's way in the Big Apple, as he totaled just 789 rushing yards on 245 carries (3.2 yards per carry), scoring three touchdowns on the ground. (Bell also amassed 461 receiving yards and scored a touchdown through the air.)

The Jets under general manager Joe Douglas—who was hired by the organization three months after New York signed the veteran free agent Bell in 2019—have some roster decisions to make and likely won't cut Bell. However, the team is now claiming Bell lost “explosiveness” in his first season back from a contractual dispute with the Steelers by gaining weight.

Via Rich Cimini in ESPN.com:

The Jets, who felt Bell gained weight and lost explosiveness as the season went on, have to make it work for another year.

Bell signed a four-year, $52.5 million contract with the Jets in March of last year, with the three-time Pro Bowl running back pegged to be the centerpiece of New York's backfield along with now–rising junior quarterback Sam Darnold, the USC gunslinger who was selected third overall by Gang Green in the 2018 NFL Draft.

The 2019 season was a tale of two halves for the Jets, as Darnold, who turns 23 years old in the offseason, suffered from a freak case of mononucleosis and the team lost seven of their first eight games. New York then went 6-2 in the second half of the season, missing the postseason by two games.
