Dwight Howard has resurrected his career with the Los Angeles Lakers this season and could see a raise in his salary next summer once he enters free agency.

According to Sean Deveney of Heavy, Howard could get “a good part” of a team’s mid-level exception in free agency:

According to one NBA front-office executive, Howard has played well enough this season to early, “a good part,” of a team’s mid-level exception. The exception is expected to be worth $9.7 million and if Howard can command a deal at about $7 million, he would either chew up most of their limited cap space or take the bulk of the Lakers’ mid-level exception.

Howard is taking his second chance with the Lakers very seriously. Through the first 45 games of the season, Howard hasn’t been a distraction — on or off the court — and is playing high-level defense.

No longer a superstar in the league, Howard is coming off the bench for the Lakers and playing his role very well. He is averaging 7.8 points, 7.8 rebounds and 1.5 blocks for the Purple and Gold in 20.2 minutes per game. The three-time Defensive Player of the Year is also shooting 72.2 percent from the field.

With Howard, Anthony Davis and JaVale McGee anchoring the paint for LA, the Lakers are primed to have one of the best defenses in the NBA come playoff time. LA is 36-9. They still have the best record in the Western Conference.

Dwight Howard confirmed on Tuesday that he’ll be participating in the 2020 Slam Dunk Contest in Chicago. Howard won the 2008 Slam Dunk Contest in New Orleans.
