The Los Angeles Lakers managed to jump into the top five of the 2019 NBA Draft. There are indications they may take Texas Tech standout Jarrett Culver with the fourth pick.

Jarrett Culver worked out for the Lakers this week, and the team was reportedly enamored with what Culver showed them, according to Steve Kyler of “Basketball Insiders:”

Eric Pincus–lead Lakers writer for “Bleacher Report”–responded with some doubts that the Lakers made an actual promise to Culver, but noted that they were certainly impressed by his skill set.

This is especially noteworthy given that LeBron James himself attended Culver's workout. James has been an instrumental force in influencing front office decisions in the last few years, and it does not appear that will change anytime soon.

Still, it is slightly confusing why the Lakers seem so high on Jarrett Culver. There is no arguing that he has tremendous potential, but is he really the kind of player the Lakers need right now?

Yes, Culver averaged close to 19 points and seven rebounds last season, and he has tremendous length and a good amount of bounce, which suggests he could grow into his athleticism at the next level for the Lakers.

But traditionally, LeBron has been at his best when he is surrounded by shooters that can space the floor and create shots for themselves. Jarrett Culver shot just over 30 percent beyond the arc, and while he is decent at creating separation, he struggles against more physical defenders.

That said, Culver may have as much overall upside as any wing in the NBA Draft not named Zion Williamson or R.J. Barrett.
