LSU football is stringing impressive College Football Recruiting wins in June. The Tigers and incoming head coach Lane Kiffin won over four-star running back Trey Martin on June 17. Now LSU flipped a big target who was committed to Houston in Gary Burney Jr.
The now former Cougars commit made his flip decision on Sunday, confirming the decision with Hayes Fawcett of On3/Rivals. Burney later became more in-depth with Sam Spiegelman of On3 about his choice to choose LSU.
“It’s LSU. I have been dreaming about this since I was a kid,” Burney told Rivals. “I have been waiting for this.”
He adds how he felt “overlooked and doubted,” but is thankful the LSU coaches have bet on him.
Spiegelman adds how LSU wide receivers coach George McDonald took a liking to Burney during a spring camp setting. LSU gains a 6-foot-4 wideout in the process.
But Kiffin, McDonald and the Tigers reel in a local in-state talent here too. Burney stars for Parkway High in Bossier City, Louisiana and already has played two varsity seasons. But he broke out in 2025 by catching 76 passes, 1,367 yards and 15 touchdowns.
LSU gains track speed here too, as Burney competes in the 200-meter and 4×100 relay for his high school. He earned a regional Louisiana 5A invite via the latter event.
Houston wasn't the only Big 12 program chasing him. Baylor and Cincinnati pursued him too. But LSU continues to make big recruiting moves.
Kiffin re-added school legend Ed Orgeron to the staff in helping lead recruitment efforts. LSU owns 13 verbal commits for the 2027 class and ranks in the top 20 nationally.
