The New York Mets announced Monday that they will not pick up the 2022 option on manager Luis Rojas. While Rojas will no longer be the manager, he has been offered a different role in the organization. It's unclear if he'll take whatever that role is.
The Mets released this statement:
“The entire Mets organization is grateful for the dedication and devotion that Luis has exhibited over the last two seasons as manager,” said President Sandy Alderson. “He has shown a great commitment to the Mets over many years in multiple capacities. These decisions are never easy, but we feel a change is needed at this time.”
Rojas has spent over a decade in the Mets organization, but he finally got the call up to manager in 2020. Unfortunately, things didn't go well for him. New York went 26-34 in the COVID-shortened 2020 season and then a disappointing 77-85 this season.
The Mets had high expectations for 2021 and got off to a strong start this season, but they tailed off and never recovered in the NL East. There was also plenty of drama surrounding the team, including the infamous thumbs down saga involving Francisco Lindor, Javier Baez and others.
New Mets owner Steven Cohen is trying to turn the franchise around. New York hasn't made the playoffs since 2016 and has only been to the postseason four times in this century. Cohen is thinking big when it comes to hiring a new lead executive and manager.
