The New York Mets currently bolster one of the more dynamic lineups in all of baseball today, although Robinson Cano has not been much of a factor in their success on offense so far this season.
Through 10 games played, Cano has posted career lows across the board, including in batting average (.206) and OBP (.250). From his .100 batting average with runners in scoring position to his lowly 25.0 percent strikeout percentage, he has had dire struggles at the plate in his return to action after missing the 2021 season due to a PED suspension.
Nonetheless, Mets manager Buck Showalter is not planning on throwing in the towel on Cano at this point in the campaign.
“He’s had some good moments for us,” Showalter said ahead of the Mets' series finale against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday. “I think he’s only going to get better as the weather warms up, like a lot of guys.”
Cano has so far earned six starts at second base and three as the team’s designated hitter. Showalter does have multiple options to be his go-to DH for the remainder of the season, and if he opts to cut the cord on the veteran slugger, he would then at the least have Jeff McNeil and Luis Guillorme to rotate out at second base.
In the big picture, Cano may soon need to turn it around at the plate in order to continue to be an option for the Mets’ everyday starting lineup.
