Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves is set to become a top unrestricted free agent this summer.

Although he is widely expected to remain with the Lakers, league sources suggest that the Brooklyn Nets could challenge their position by utilizing over $50 million in salary cap space to make a maximum offer of four years and $180 million.

This significant offer could create complications for Los Angeles, as Reaves is eligible for a five-year, $239 million maximum contract.

However, executives project that he will ultimately land around $200 million.

While the Nets can present an appealing offensive role in New York, the Lakers can counter with a postseason-ready roster built around superstar Luka Doncic.

While navigating these free-agent logistics, HoopsHype insider Jovan Buha clarified that the Lakers can retain Reaves while pursuing Detroit Pistons center Jalen Duren.

Buha noted that Reaves' contract situation operates separately from the team's standard cap space.

Although letting Reaves walk would free up an additional $21 million in spending power, the Lakers cannot replace his production with that amount.

The franchise is likely to hold Reaves' cap slot and sign him for an amount above that figure, allowing them to maintain the flexibility to offer Duren a contract independent of Reaves.

Securing Duren, however, remains complicated, as the Pistons are looking to secure their young center following a second-round playoff exit against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Duren's growth during the regular season positions him to command a deal approaching $40 million annually, especially given his close bond with Pistons star Cade Cunningham.

A rival league executive warned that if Duren demands a maximum contract, Detroit may advise him to seek an outside offer sheet. However, the Pistons' front office must navigate the situation carefully, as Duren is firmly established as Cunningham's preferred teammate.
