The Philadelphia 76ers have been searching for their new President of Basketball Operations after the firing of Daryl Morey at the conclusion of their playoff run. On Friday, the Sixers made their decision.
Cleveland Cavaliers general manager Mike Gansey has agreed to become the new President of Basketball Operations for the 76ers, according to ClutchPoints' Brett Siegel. ESPN was first to report the news on Twitter.
The move had been coming for days, with Siegel reporting back on Tuesday that Gansey was gaining steam as the top option for the Sixers and again on Friday that it appeared to be near competion.
“Multiple league sources have told ClutchPoints that current Cleveland Cavaliers general manager Mike Gansey is gaining serious momentum to become the leader of the Philadelphia 76ers front office,” Siegel said this week. “As reported on Tuesday, Gansey is considered one of the front runners for the position after spending over a decade in Cleveland with their G League organization, as well as working alongside executive Koby Altman in the NBA.”
Mike Gansey joined the Cleveland Cavaliers front office back in 2011 and has worked his way up the ranks to one of the highest ranking front office positions with the Cavs before departing to be the top decision maker with the Philadelphia 76ers.
Gansey's career includes being named NBA D-League Executive of the Year in 2017, being promoted to assistant assistant general manager in 2017 under then-GM Koby Altman, and eventually becoming the general manager in 2022 once Altman was named Cavs President of Basketball Operations.
The Philadelphia 76ers impressed many by taking down the Boston Celtics in the first round of the NBA playoffs, overcoming a 3-1 deficit and winning Game 7 in Boston. But their season came to an unimpressive end when they were swept easily at the hands of the New York Knicks, who have since advanced to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999 and will look to win their first NBA Championship since 1973.
