The NC State men's basketball program has received its punishment for its role in the college basketball's FBI scandal. While there will be no postseason ban, the program has been placed on probation for one year and former Wolfpack head coach Mark Gottfried was given a one-year show-cause order, per ESPN's Mark Schlabach.

Furthermore, former assistant coach Orlando Early was given a six-year show-cause order, the most severe punishment that can be levied against a coach under NCAA rules. Early allegedly helped facilitate a $40,000 payment from a former Adidas consultant to the family of Dennis Smith Jr. in 2015. The Wolfpack were recruiting Smith at the time, and he wound up playing his one season of college basketball at NC State before moving on to the NBA in 2017.

NC State received a notice of allegations from the NCAA on the matter in 2019, part of a large college basketball probe that also involves Arizona, Kansas, Louisville, LSU and Memphis. The NCAA alleged two Level I violations against NC State, including a failure-to-monitor charge against Gottfried.

Gottfried was the coach of the Wolfpack from 2011 to 2017, when he was fired. He sued NC State in 2020, alleging the school stopped making settlement payments owed to him after he was fired. The two sides settled the matter, but he's now currently on paid administrative leave at his current job at Cal State Northridge because of alleged rules violations.

As for the current Wolfpack team, they're 7-4 under Kevin Keatts.
