The Indianapolis Colts have a big decision to make this offseason with their quarterback, but drafting one early in the 2020 NFL draft would be a big mistake. Jacoby Brissett had his fair share of struggles during the 2019 season and it has led to some wondering if there will be a change made this offseason.
Brissett might not be the long term option for the Colts, but drafting a quarterback early isn't the answer. Let's breakdown three reasons why.
3. Draft position
The Colts have nine draft picks during the 2020 draft but they don't select until 13th overall. This is a loaded draft class but the only two sure picks seem to be Joe Burrow and Tua Tagovailoa (if he is healthy).
The Colts don't need someone who is a risk, they need someone who is a sure bet. It would be shocking if Burrow or Tua were available when the team goes on the clock. Unless the team is willing to trade up, they aren't going to get either of those guys.
2. Plenty of veteran quarterbacks available
Not often is there this many good quarterbacks available on the free-agent market. Tom Brady and Phillip Rivers are the big headliners and they both could look good on the Colts.
Other options include Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota, and Drew Brees if he decided to leave the Colts. these are all players who could step in and help the franchise immediately.
The thing the team would have to decide is if those players were an upgrade over Brissett, or if Brissett is still the best option going forward now.
Article Continues Below1. Win Now Mode
The biggest reason the team should stick with Brissett or go with one of the veteran quarterbacks is because of the teams win now mode.
The Colts' defense was solid during the 2019 season, especially against the run. On offense, they had a strong running game rushing for 133 yards per game which was seventh in the NFL.
The Colts also have a boatload of money to spend in free agency. According to spotrac.com, the Colts are projected to have $86 million in cap space.
This is a team that is one or two pieces, and a good quarterback from really competing for a Super Bowl. It doesn't make a lot of sense to draft a quarterback now and set the process back a few years.
Maybe the team should draft a quarterback in round four or five and hope they can develop him into a starter down the road.
