The Chicago Blackhawks swung a rather bold trade with the Buffalo Sabres ahead of the 2026 NHL Draft. Chicago traded the fourth overall pick in the upcoming draft as part of a package to acquire defenseman Bowen Byram and forward Jordan Greenway. The deal drew a ton of discourse online, but for Byram, this move is about a new opportunity.
“I'm ready for the opportunity,” the new Blackhawks defenseman said, via NHL.com. “At the end of the day, I can't get too carried away with anything. I have to come in and prove what I can do. I know I'm confident in myself. I feel that, after this move, the Blackhawks are confident in me. It's a great feeling to have a team believing in you. I just think it's a huge opportunity and I'm excited to try to fulfill it.”
The Blackhawks saw some progress under head coach Jeff Blashill in the 2025-26 season. Adding Byram to the mix will certainly make the team better. At the same time, the price paid is quite steep, especially for a team that has not made the playoffs in a non-COVID season since 2017.
Still, Byram elevates Chicago's blueline in a big way. He brings Stanley Cup championship experience, having won the title with the Colorado Avalanche in 2022. He is coming off one of the best seasons of his career following some injury struggles. This past season, he helped the Sabres come within a game of the Eastern Conference Finals.
Regardless of what anyone outside the organization thinks of this trade, Chicago is confident it will work out for them. It will certainly be intriguing to see how things shake out for the Blackhawks and Byram this upcoming season.
