Melvin Gordon is going to be one of the most sought after players during free agency, and it could make a lot of sense for the New England Patriots to try and sign him. Gordon made it clear earlier in the offseason that he wanted to be back with the Los Angeles Chargers, but it takes two to tango, and it's unclear if the Chargers want him back.
“Hopefully, I'm here,” Gordon said Thursday on PFT Live, via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. “Hopefully, I don't have to wait till March to know where I'm gonna be playing.”
According to Gordon, Chargers general manager Tom Telesco has told him he deserves to get paid, but who knows if that will be by the Chargers or somewhere else.
“When it comes to business, you have to take your emotions out of it,” Gordon said. “It’s not about if you deserve to be here or not. I’ve talked to Tom plenty of times, he tells me ‘you deserve to get paid’ but sometimes it just might not be the right situation.”
One big thing the Chargers need to sort out is how much they want to spend on the position. Austin Ekeler is a restricted free agent, and he could be in line for a big payday.
If the Chargers decide to keep Ekeler, Gordon will probably be the one going out, and the Patriots are a team that makes a lot of sense.
So why the Patriots?
Article Continues BelowTom Brady, or whoever is the quarterback next season for the Patriots, needs more weapons. The Patriots' rushing attack was fine during the 2019 season, but it wasn't elite, and it could use some upgrades. As a team, they averaged 106.4 rushing yards per game, which was 18th in football.
When the Patriots selected Sony Michel in the first round of the 2018 draft, they were looking for a superstar, and he has been far too inconsistent. Even though he finished with 912 yards total in 2019, he didn't rush for more than 96 yards in a game.
Even though Gordon was splitting carries with Ekeler, he was elite catching and running the ball. In 11 games, he rushed 162 times for 612 yards and eight touchdowns. He also caught 42 passes for 296 yards.
If the Patriots sign him, he would be the clear cut number one, and it might be smart for the Patriots to trade away Michel for more draft capital, or another player.
Brady wants playmakers, and Gordon would be a great start.
