The Montreal Canadiens allowed the first goal of the game on Sunday in Game 3 against the Buffalo Sabres. However, they did not allow the Sabres to take the game over. In fact, things pretty much went Montreal’s way after Tage Thompson’s opener on Sunday.
The Canadiens won Game 3 in dominant fashion by the score of 6-2. Alex Newhook shone again, much like he did in Game 2. He scored two goals in this contest to help Montreal earn the victory and an all-important 2-1 series lead.
As mentioned, the Sabres opened the scoring in Game 3. Thompson scored a tap in for his first goal since April 19th. It gave Buffalo some momentum, but they couldn’t hold the lead through the end of the first period. Newhook scored his first of this game to make it a 1-1 contest.
In the second period, the Habs would take the game over completely. Montreal took the lead thanks to Cole Caufield’s power play goal. They had a goal disallowed shortly thereafter. However, the Habs would get that third goal on a Zack Bolduc shot later in the second.
Goals from Montreal’s Juraj Slafkovsky and Buffalo’s Rasmus Dahlin would give the Canadiens a 4-2 lead heading into the third period. The Sabres pushed hard to close the gap, but it was not to be. Kirby Dach scored on a rebound to make it 5-2, while Newhook’s second of the night made it 6-2.
The Canadiens now have a big series lead and a ton of momentum. They will take the ice at the Bell Centre in Montreal on Tuesday night with the chance to take a commanding 3-1 lead back to Buffalo.
