New York Islanders forward Mathew Barzal will, unfortunately, miss the chance to represent Team Canada at the Men's World Hockey Championship, but being able to replace him with Sidney Crosby is a nice consolation prize for the team. Crosby, who battled some injuries to end the season, felt like a surefire bet to take the rest and recovery of the offseason, but the NHL legend is going to take any chance he can get to play before he has to call it a career.
Barzal's absence is due to an abundance of caution because of a pre-existing injury, according to Hockey Canada via X, formerly Twitter.
Crosby was an integral part of Team Canada's 4 Nations Face-Off-winning roster as captain in 2025. He donned the C again at the Winter Olympics this year, and looked to be on his way to another gold medal until a Radko Gudas hit knocked him out of the tournament and additional games during the Pittsburgh Penguins season.
The decision for him to represent his country after an injury-filled year and a lot of hockey over the past two years tells you everything you need to know about why he is one of the greatest to ever play the game. With his opportunities to play meaningful games running out at the end of his career, it seems like Crosby is going to play any chance he gets.
Barzal last represented his country in back-to-back World Junior Championships in 2016 and 2017, winning a silver medal in his second go-around with the team.
