The Philadelphia Phillies are interested in free-agent shortstop Didi Gregorius, according to Jon Morosi of MLB Network.

Morosi notes that should the Phillies sign Gregorius, they would then change fellow shortstop Jean Segura's position or trade him.

Philadelphia's interest in Gregorius does not come as much of a surprise, as new Phillies manager Joe Girardi managed Gregorius with the New York Yankees.

Gregorius is, by far, the best shortstop on the open market, but he is coming off a rough 2019 campaign in which he missed half the season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. During the time he was on the field, he slashed .238/.276/.441 with 16 home runs and 61 RBI over 344 plate appearances.

The 29-year-old originally signed with the Cincinnati Reds as an amateur free agent back in 2007. He made his big-league debut in 2012, logging six hits in 21 trips to the dish.

That ensuing offseason, the Reds traded Gregorius to the Arizona Diamondbacks. In 2013, he slashed .252/.332/.373 with seven long balls and 28 RBI across 404 plate appearances.

Gregorius spent two seasons with the Diamondbacks before being dealt to the Yankees in December 2014.

His first year in New York was lackluster, as he slashed .265/.318/.370 with nine dingers and 56 RBI through 578 trips to the plate. But the following year, Gregorius showed more offensive potential, slashing .276/.304/.447 with 20 homers, 30 doubles and 70 RBI over 597 plate appearances.

The Netherlands native's best season in The Big Apple came in 2018, when he registered a slash line of .268/.335/.494 with 27 home runs and 86 RBI across 569 trips to the dish.

Gregorius is also known as a slick fielder, although he was fairly mediocre at shortstop in 2019.
