The Detroit Pistons have enjoyed a strong offseason and appear ready to take the next step forward in 2022-2023. Cade Cunningham has emerged as the leader for the Pistons. The 20-year old took some time to field media questions during a recent NBA 2K23 event in Las Vegas. At the event, Cunningham revealed why Phoenix Suns' star point guard Chris Paul is his favorite NBA matchup.

“Favorite guy to matchup with… Chris Paul was really fun to play against,” Cunningham said. “Just ‘cuz he is always making the right read. I feel like watching him, and being on the opposite side of it, I feel like I learned a lot in those games, I'd say Chris Paul.”

At just 20-years old, Cade Cunningham likely watched Chris Paul growing up. Paul endured recent criticism following his performance during the 2021-2022 playoffs. But there is no denying the fact that CP3 is one of the most talented and intelligent point guards to ever play the game. The way he orchestrates an offense and exposes defenders is admirable.

And Cunningham has taken notice. Paul won't beat you with pure athleticism. But he will make the right reads, as Cunningham said, and that makes him very difficult to defend.

Cunningham takes pride in his playmaking ability. Yes, he has the potential to become a prolific scorer. He averaged over 17 points per game during his 2021-2022 rookie season. But he added just under 6 assists per contest as well. And that number will only continue to climb if he continues studying Paul's game.

Cade Cunningham is poised to lead the Pistons this season and for the foreseeable future.
