For much of the offseason, the Los Angeles Rams focused the bulk of their moves around providing second-year quarterback Jared Goff the best opportunity to succeed.

Head coach Sean McVay stated on Wednesday that he believes the season opener will give the organization their first real chance to evaluate where Goff is in his development. (h/t Pro Football Talk)

“I think any time that you get guys in the games, that’s where you get a chance to really evaluate them. I think we’ve been really pleased with what we’ve seen in practice – the pocket movement, the ability to work through progressions. The best test is when you can truly get tackled and I think in spurts, he’s showed some really good positive signs of going in the right direction with what he did in the preseason. Certainly this game on Sunday will offer a great opportunity for us to see if what we feel like the confidence that we have in him and that we expect to see. Looking forward to seeing him deliver and we have a lot of confidence in Jared that he’ll do that.”

The 22-year-old has shown glimpses of promise at various points in the offseason. At the same time, he had a disappointing showing against the Los Angeles Chargers. Granted, these were brief appearances, it still gave a little peek of what may come this season that could feature some ups and downs as he progresses along.

Los Angeles has high hopes that Goff can become the franchise quarterback that can finally snap their playoff drought that extends over a decade. The front office has made several key moves to give him weapons in the passing game through the draft, free agency, and via a trade.

Ultimately, only time will tell whether Goff is the solution under center and Sunday's game could be quiet telling.
