The Boston Red Sox have activated right-handed pitcher Nathan Eovaldi from the 60-day injured list, according to Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe. As a corresponding move, the Red Sox sent fellow righty Ryan Weber to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Eovaldi started just four games for Boston earlier this season before having to undergo arthroscopic surgery to address loose bodies in his right elbow in late April.

During his four starts, he pitched 21 innings, allowing 14 earned runs off of 21 hits. He struck out 16 batters.

There has been some discussion about the Red Sox potentially making Eovaldi a closer for the rest of the season.

Boston signed Eovaldi to a four-year, $68 million contract this past offseason, a deal that was seen as rather risky given Eovaldi's extensive injury history, and those fears came to life in April.

However, Eovaldi was a hero for the Red Sox in 2018, as Boston acquired him in a deadline trade with the Tampa Bay Rays last summer and he went on to go 3-3 with a 3.33 ERA over 11 regular-season starts for the Red Sox. He then had a terrific postseason, going 2-1 with a 1.61 ERA over two starts and six appearances overall, surrendering just 15 hits while fanning 16 batters across 22.1 frames of action in helping Boston win the World Series.

The 29-year-old was originally selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 11th round of the 2008 MLB Draft and made his major-league debut in 2011. However, his time with the Dodgers was short-lived, as he was dealt to the Miami Marlins in 2012 and spent two-and-a-half years with the Marlins before being traded to the New York Yankees.

Eovaldi spent two years with the Yankees in 2015 and 2016 but missed all of 2017 due to injuries.
