The Boston Red Sox just can't catch a break this season. While they stand at a solid 46-39 record, injuries have continually threatened to derail their season completely. The injury bug has all but taken over the team, affecting both the hitting and the pitching staff.

One of the players that was afflicted by the injury bug is Kike Hernandez, the hard-hitting slugger of the Red Sox. Hernandez has missed 28 games due to a strained flexor muscle. The hope was that he would back with the team sooner than later. Unfortunately, his rehab has hit a bit of an obstacle according to manager Alex Cora. (via Massachusetts Live)

“He said that after the game, he felt tight in the same spot,” Cora said. “He was able to take his at-bats and do whatever he did, but after the game he didn’t feel great. That one, I don’t want to call it a setback yet, but the fact he’s not able to post, it’s just another obstacle.”

Hernandez made his routine start in the Triple-A team of the Red Sox as part of his rehab. Unfortunately, it became apparent quickly that he wasn't quite ready to return to action yet. He went 0-4 as Worcester's designated hitter, feeling hip tightness during the entire time. When one of your best players goes hitless in Triple A action, that's a good indicator of his health.

The Red Sox are holding their own so far in a tightly contested AL East. Their rival New York Yankees have a firm grasp at first place, and they don't seem to be slowing down anytime soon. The goal for Boston should be to get the best possible record to earn a Wild Card spot. Currently, they hold a half-game lead over the Rays and one-game lead over the Blue Jays.
