Simmons will be reevaluated next week as the Sixers wait for the inflammation around the nerve to subside. The team hopes he can return before the playoffs, sources say, and with enough time to get back into shape.

There is some level of concern surrounding Simmons’ injury since back ailments are never to be taken lightly. The Sixers will clearly be cautious with the two-time All-Star moving forward.

Simmons has appeared in 54 games for the Sixers this season. He’s averaging 16.7 points, 7.8 rebounds and 8.2 assists while shooting 58.5 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from beyond the arc and 62.7 percent from the free-throw line.

The Sixers are 38-25 on the season and are in fifth place in the Eastern Conference standings after defeating the Sacramento Kings on Thursday for only their 10th win on the road.

The 76ers have lost in the second round of the playoffs the last two seasons and head coach Brett Brown could possibly lose his job this summer if the Sixers once again falter early in the postseason again.

Considering that, the Sixers need Simmons and Joel Embiid to be fully healthy come playoff time.
