The Detroit Tigers were hoping to look like a brand new team in 2022 after the offseason acquisition of Javier Baez. The star infielder paired with the finally MLB-ready trio of Tarik Skubal, Matt Manning, and Casey Mize had fans hopeful for an improved campaign. Unfortunately, injuries have already weighed down upon the team. After Mize hit the IL with an elbow injury, both Manning and Baez sustained injuries on Saturday. Per the Tigers, Baez was placed on the 10-day IL with right thumb soreness, while Manning exited Saturday's start early with an apparent injury.

Baez's stay on the injury list will be retroactive to April 13, meaning he'd be eligible to return to the team as soon as April 23. The Tigers have yet to replace him on the 28-man roster, though intend to do so on Sunday. Baez signed a six-year, $140 million deal with the Tigers in the offseason. Across his first 5 games with the team, Baez hit 1 home run and had 4 RBI.

As for Manning, the young right-hander lasted just two innings in the clash with the rival Kansas City Royals. He was replaced in the third inning by Drew Hutchison, and the team later revealed Manning had been dealing with shoulder discomfort. Manning was particularly impressive in his MLB debut against the Boston Red Sox, striking out 2 batters while surrendering just 1 run and 1 hit across 6 innings.

After his promising start last time out, injury forced him to an early exit on Saturday after just 38 pitches. He surrendered 1 run on 5 hits, striking out 2. Tigers fans will be anxiously awaiting a more detailed update on the 24-year-old, and whether or not he too will need a stint on the IL.
