The Minnesota Timberwolves lost star center Karl-Anthony Towns to the NBA's health and safety protocols earlier this week, and the team has acted quickly to scoop up a replacement for the big man.

According to Shams Charania of the Athletic, the Timberwolves have signed former lottery pick Greg Monroe to a 10-day contract on Sunday.

The loss of KAT is a tough pill for the Timberwolves to swallow, especially amid the team's recent rise in the Western Conference. Towns had been averaging 24.5 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 3.6 assists on the season, knocking down 2.4 three-pointers per game on a career-high 42.6% clip.

Monroe, on the other hand, hasn't featured in an NBA game since the 2018-19 season when he played for the Toronto Raptors. He was traded to the Boston Celtics that season before being released and then landed with the Philadelphia 76ers with whom he played three games.

Monroe was the seventh overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft, having been selected by the Detroit Pistons out of Georgetown. Monroe was a walking double-double throughout his first few years in the league, averaging 14.3 points and 9.2 rebounds per game across his five-year tenure with the Pistons. After his stint in Detroit, Monroe joined the Milwaukee Bucks where he made his first postseason appearance.

Across his NBA career, Monroe recorded averages of 13.2 points and 8.3 rebounds in 632 games. He never made an All-Star team and ended his career as somewhat of a journeyman, enduring short spells with four teams. With the Timberwolves in desperate need of some depth in the interior, Monroe could be a valuable addition at a minimal risk considering the 10-day contract.
