Andrew Luck was taken with the first pick of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts. During his time at Stanford, he threw for 9,430 yards and 82 touchdowns. He was viewed as the best quarterback prospect since Peyton Manning. His rookie season saw him throw for 4,374 touchdowns. Luck finished with 23 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. He lost out on the Offensive Rookie of the Year award to Robert Griffin III.

Luck will turn 30 years old at the beginning of the season. There is no doubt that he is a generational talent. The Colts went from one franchise quarterback to another with Peyton Manning to Luck. After the 2018 season, Luck was named the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year. He missed all of 2017 with a shoulder injury. In his first season back from injury, Luck threw for 4,593 yards and 39 touchdowns while leading Indianapolis back to the postseason with a 10-6 record.

With Luck being healthy and back on the field, it has been questioned where he ranks among starting quarterbacks in the NFL.

Top Five

Who the top five quarterbacks in the NFL are is a subjective topic. All lists are constructed differently, but there are players who are locks. After a season where he finished with over 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns, Patrick Mahomes has to crack the top five. He is the reigning MVP and at 23 years old has the chance to be a force for a long time.

Aaron Rodgers is a marvel in the NFL. He can put a ball wherever he wants with just one flick of the wrist. Rodgers has the ability to make plays using his legs and his arm. With one Super Bowl win, Rodgers has found a home on the top five list for years. Tom Brady is widely regarded as the best quarterback to ever play in the NFL. At age 41, Brady is still playing at a high level. He was the league's MVP in 2017 and is still winning Super Bowls at a high rate. Drew Brees also lands on many top five lists.

Luck comes in at fifth on the list. There are a few other quarterbacks that could hold the fifth spot, but Luck has an edge over all of them.

Luck vs. the Field

There is a new generation of quarterback that is taking over the league. Led by Mahomes, players like Baker Mayfield, Deshaun Watson, and Carson Wentz are viewed as the new wave at the position. None of them have taken the next step yet. Luck has an edge over players like Philip Rivers and Matt Ryan.

Aside from one spectacular season that ended with an MVP award, Ryan has had an average NFL career. Rivers is a future Hall of Fame quarterback, but he is known for never winning the big game, usually against the Patriots. Russell Wilson is the only player with a chance to jump Luck and find himself in the top five.

Luck has not won a Super Bowl in his career yet. He has appeared in one AFC Championship Game. When going through the league and looking at all teams, there are not many that are set up better than the Colts.

With Luck and a legit No. 1 receiver in T.Y. Hilton, the Colts have a chance to be relevant for a long time.
