The Los Angeles Angels announced two roster moves on Wednesday. Infielder Vaughn Grissom was activated from the injured while infielder Trey Mancini was designated for assignment. The move to designate Mancini for assignment was surprising.

Mancini was prepared to retire before landing the opportunity with the Angels. The 34-year-old had not appeared at the MLB level since the 2023 season. Mancini ended up getting an opportunity in MLB with the Angels and played in five games before the team's DFA decision.

The move was surprising, as Mancini has hit .308/.286/.462 across 14 plate appearances. It was obviously a limited sample size, but Mancini's performance still displayed potential.

The Angels are struggling once again. Mancini could have made an impact if given more of an opportunity. Nevertheless, the ball club had to make room on the roster and they decided to designate Mancini for assignment.

One has to imagine that the veteran will receive another opportunity. Teams are likely intrigued by what he accomplished in Anaheim despite only appearing in five contests. He has previously displayed that he can compete at a high level in the past as well, so a number of teams may have interest in adding him to their rosters.

The Angels entered their game on Wednesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks with a 30-44 overall record. They are eight games behind the Seattle Mariners for first place in the division. Los Angeles will attempt to figure things out soon. Meanwhile, updates on Trey Mancini will continue to be provided as they are made available.
