Comparing quarterbacks of the past to Patrick Mahomes is a fool's errand.

The Kansas City Chiefs superstar not only plays as unique a style as any signal-caller the game has ever seen, but also put up arguably the best single campaign of any quarterback in league history last year during his first season as a starter. There just isn't a seamless analogue for a player who plays the game differently than his predecessors, reaching a level of success maybe none of them ever have so early in his career.

If there's one quarterback whose base combination of arm talent, field vision, and playmaking moxie matches that of Mahomes, though, it's certainly Aaron Rodgers, a reality new Chiefs cornerback Bashaud Breeland knows better than most after spending last season with the Green Bay Packers.

“Oh man, it’s going to be exciting,” he said earlier this week of playing with Patrick Mahomes, per 247 Sports' Kirk Larrabee. “I just got done playing with Aaron Rodgers, and to me he’s like a younger version of Aaron Rodgers with a lot more attributes. I feel like young guys are starting to prepare different these days, but he’s an exciting player, and I’m just ready to compete against him. I know if I can ball against him in practice, I can play against anybody in games.”

Mahomes, the league's reigning MVP, threw for 5,097 yards, 50 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions while completing 66.0 percent of his passes in 2018, ridiculous numbers only matched by Peyton Manning during his historic 2013 season.

Kansas City has undergone a lot of change this offseason, on both sides of the ball, after losing to the New England Patriots in overtime of the AFC Championship Game, and Pro Bowl wide receiver Tyreek Hill's future amid further legal scrutiny remains uncertain. As long as the Chiefs have Mahomes, though, they should feel confident in their standing as a perennial Super Bowl contender – just like Rodgers and the Packers.
