The Dallas Cowboys are recovering from a harsh first-round defeat at the hands of the Green Bay Packers. Numerous fans and critics wanted the team to part ways with Mike McCarthy. Stephen A. Smith was no exception, but he had an interesting reaction to the Cowboys' choice to keep Coach McCarthy.
Stephen A. Smith reacts to the Cowboys' decision on Coach Mike McCarthy
Dallas announced Coach McCarthy would return to the team for the 2024-25 season on Wednesday. Of course, this was a shock to Smith, who posted a comical reaction on his X account:
Smith has not been shy about expressing his discontent with the Cowboys' perennial playoff struggles. His reaction is hilarious, but it raises questions about whether McCarthy will be successful in his next go-around.
Perhaps McCarthy could have made some better coaching adjustments during the Cowboys' rough game against the Packers, but the responsibility for the team's downfall is not his alone. Several players including Dak Prescott took accountability and recognized the need for improvement.
Moreover, numerous associates of the Cowboys organization admired McCarthy's leadership during the season. That support was backed when the team announced his return for another year. Team owner Jerry Jones provided this statement amid the team's decision:
“I believe this team is very close and capable of achieving our ultimate goals and the best step forward for us will be with Mike McCarthy as our head coach. There is great benefit to continuing the team's progress under Mike's leadership as our head coach,” Jones explained to Adam Schefter.
Naturally, fans question whether things will improve in 2024-25, but they can rest easy knowing they have an experienced coach who still shows great promise.
