After 3 years of ups and downs with the team, Antonio Giovinazzi officially says goodbye to F1 and Alfa Romeo.

Ever since the start of the 2021 season, Giovinazzi's future seemed rather unclear and hung in the balance. Coupled with the fact that Giovinazzi had mixed results throughout the season, it certainly did not help his case whatsoever. This ultimately led to Alfa Romeo announcing on Tuesday that the Italian driver is set to depart from the team after the final race at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

According to Alfa Romeo, Giovinazzi was popular among the fans and team personnel—an overall superb professional. Alfa Romeo team principal Fred Vasseur chimes in on the departure of the Italian driver.

Via F1:

“Vasseur said: “Saying goodbye to a driver is never easy, especially so in the case of Antonio, who has been part of the team for so long.”

“As we part ways, we will cherish the memories of the good times and learn lessons from the bad ones, knowing these moments all made us grow together as a team.”

With that said, Giovinazzi took to social media to honestly express his gratitude and thoughts about his departure—which resulted in F1 fans posting multiple threads as well—reciprocating the gratitude that he had shared.

The vacancy of Giovinazzi's former Alfa Romeo seat was short-lived as F2 prospect Guanyu Zhou, who becomes the first-ever Chinese driver in Formula 1 history was announced as Valterri Bottas' new Alfa teammate. This finalizes the entire F1 grid for the next season with Zhou seeking to learn the ropes from Bottas next year.
