The Seattle Mariners agreed to a deal with Jesse Winker, completing the signing of their 40-man roster through the 2022 season.
The Mariners' PR team announced the news Thursday afternoon.
According to The Athletic's Corey Brock, the deal is not an extension, but a buy-out of his last two years of arbitration eligibility.
Not an extension. This simply buys out his last two years of arbitration-eligibility (2022, 2023). https://t.co/bSDO71hlD5

Winker's deal is a two-year, $14.5 million contract with the Mariners. He now is not arbitration eligible next season, and will be a free agent at the conclusion of the 2023 season, per Robert Murray.

Winker was one of many players involved in the team's March 14 trade with the Cincinnati Reds. The 28-year-old has played in 61 of the Mariners' 63 games so far this season, and he's quickly become a fan favorite in Seattle because of his early success. He's batting .214 through 224 at-bats with 48 hits, four home runs, and 24 RBIs.
Despite his contributions and sluggers Eugenio Suarez and Ty France, the Mariners are struggling through the first part of the season. After 63 games, the Mariners are well below .500 with a 28-35 record.
Fortunately, they have a solid opportunity coming up to turn their season around. The Mariners begin their five game series against the Los Angeles Angels Thursday night. Despite the team's star-studded roster, LA is on a three-game losing streak, just shortly after breaking their 14-game slump.
