The San Jose Sharks announced Tuesday that they have agreed to terms with defenseman Nolan Allan on a two-year contract extension. The deal carries an average annual value of $875,000, which runs through the 2027-28 season.
Allan, 23, was set to become a restricted free agent without arbitration rights before the Sharks finalized the extension. The first season of the deal is a two-way agreement that will pay him $850,000 at the NHL level and $300,000 in the American Hockey League, with a guaranteed minimum salary of $375,000, according to PuckPedia. The second year converts to a one-way contract with a salary of $900,000 regardless of league assignment.
San Jose acquired Allan from the Chicago Blackhawks on Jan. 8, 2026, in a trade that also included goaltender Laurent Brossoit. In exchange, the Blackhawks received Ryan Ellis' contract, Jake Furlong and a draft pick package.
After joining the organization, Allan spent the remainder of the season with the AHL's San Jose Barracuda. He appeared in 35 games and finished with 14 points, including two goals and 12 assists, while adding 28 penalty minutes. His 14 points ranked fourth among Barracuda defensemen, and he nearly doubled his points-per-game rate after arriving in San Jose. Allan also produced a three-game point streak from Jan. 24-31, recording one goal and two assists, and collected points in five of nine contests between Jan. 24 and Feb. 18. He later appeared in two Calder Cup Playoff games.
Before the trade, Allan played for the Rockford IceHogs, giving him 144 career AHL games with 11 goals and 32 assists for 43 points. Across nine postseason appearances in the league, he has contributed four points.
Allan's NHL experience came during the 2024-25 season with Chicago, where he appeared in 43 games and amassed eight points on one goal and seven assists while averaging 15:08 of ice time per game. During that campaign, he logged a minus-13 rating.
Originally selected by the Blackhawks with the 32nd overall pick in the first round of the 2021 NHL Draft, Allan built an impressive junior resume in the WHL. He played 203 career games with the Prince Albert Raiders and Seattle Thunderbirds, accumulating 79 points. He helped Seattle win the 2022-23 WHL championship, garnering 10 points in 19 playoff games, and later earned WHL Second All-Star Team and CHL Memorial Cup All-Star Team honors.
On the international stage, Allan represented Canada at the 2023 World Junior Championship, managing two points in seven games as the team won the gold medal.
