The New England Patriots have come to terms to bring journeyman quarterback Brian Hoyer to the National Football League franchise.

Prior to the move by the Patriots, during an appearance on “Zolak & Bertrand” on 98.5 The Sports Hub in Boston, New England head coach Bill Belichick said that the Patriots are “definitely working toward” signing Hoyer.

The Patriots have a bye this week. This likely provided enough time for the deal to get done. It also allows Brian Hoyer a little extra time to relocate and adjust to his new surroundings.

This is not, however, the veteran gunslinger's first time with New England. Hoyer signed with the Patriots as an undrafted free agent out of Michigan State in 2009. He would go on to see action in 13 games over three seasons with the team. He was cut in 2012 by the Patriots, then had stints with the Cardinals, Browns, Texans, Bears and 49ers.

The New England Patriots made headlines a day before the trade deadline, when the franchise shipped backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to the San Francisco 49ers. What is relatively funny about this, the move by New England to move the coveted backup resulted in Hoyer's release from San Francisco and return to New England.

According to Belichick, letting go of Garppolo was something the Pats had to do.

“We probably had in my mind, in my opinion, the best quarterback situation in the league for the last 2.5 years,” Bill Belichick said. “It is just not sustainable given the way that things are set up. Definitely not something we wanted to walk away from and I felt we rode it out as long as we could. We’ve, over a period of time, explored every option possible to sustain it but, at this point, it felt like we had to make a decision. It’s a very complex situation on multiple levels. This is really the last window that we had and we did what we felt was best for the team.”

Anyway, Brian Hoyer is Tom Brady's new backup … again.
