The New York Yankees are expected to make a move for a shortstop this offseason, having a clear need for improvement at the position. With a handful of quality shortstops in free agency, the Yankees have a few options they could consider on the open market.

According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, who was speaking Monday morning on MLB Network's Hot Stove, the Yankees have been looking more closely at slugger Marcus Semien than Corey Seager during the offseason.

The Yankees have been linked to Seager since last season, but it seems that Brian Cashman and Co. may be keener on bringing Semien to the Bronx. While Semien is coming off a tremendous season in Toronto, Seager would likely represent a better solution for the Yankees given their desperate need to add a left-handed bat to the lineup. Seager's ability to take advantage of the short porch in right field makes him a vastly better fit to suit up in pinstripes than the right-handed Semien.

Semien, 31, finished third in AL MVP voting both last year and in 2019. He had a career year in 2021, hitting 45 home runs and driving in 105 RBI while recording a .873 OPS. Additionally, Semien stole a career-high 15 bases and won a Gold Glove for his defense at second base.

Seager, on the other hand, is just 27 years old. Despite only playing in 95 games last season with the Dodgers, he slashed an impressive .306/.394/.521 with 16 home runs and 57 RBI. The thought of Seager pulling the ball out to the short porch at Yankee Stadium has been frequently discussed throughout the past year, but perhaps the front office feels Semien may be better suited to New York after watching him terrorize the AL East in 2021.
