Minnesota Timberwolves All-Star big man Karl-Anthony Towns will miss the first game of his NBA career on Friday against the New York Knicks.

Towns got into a car accident on Thursday and has entered the NBA’s concussion protocol. The former No. 1 overall pick had played in his first 303 NBA games since entering the league back in 2015.

Towns was able to get on a commercial flight from Minnesota to New York after doctors cleared him to fly.

In 57 games this season for the Timberwolves, Karl-Anthony Towns is averaging 23.1 points, 12.0 rebounds and 3.2 assists per contest. The 23-year-old star center is shooting 51.2 percent from the field, 38.9 percent from beyond the arc and 84.7 percent from the free-throw line.

Minnesota is 27-30 on the season, good for 11th place in the Western Conference standings. Even without their best player, the Timberwolves should still be able to defeat the lowly Knicks, who are just 11-47 on the season.

Head coach Ryan Saunders hasn't announced who will start in Towns' place on Friday. Right now, the organization is just happy their franchise player is okay and in good spirits after the car accident.

Karl-Anthony Towns made his second All-Star team this season. He leads Minnesota in scoring and rebounding.
