The new format for IPL 2022 is out and fans are confused about it. We are used to regular qualifiers and eliminators. But this season will be different and confusing for most people. There are 10 teams that will be “virtually” divided into 2 groups of 5 teams. The seeding is based on two factors: the number of IPL titles won and the number of finals played by the team.

This seeding will form 2 groups as follows:

League Matches:

  • Each team will play a total of 14 matches.
  • Total of 70 league matches.
  • 7 home and 7 away matches.
  • 10 out of 14 matches will be home-and-away matches.
  • Each team will play 2 matches with the teams in the same group.
  • 2 matches against the team in the corresponding row.
  • A team will play the remaining 4 teams once.Example: MI will play 2 matches each with KKR, RR, DC, LSG, and CSK. 1 match each with SRH, RCB, PBKS, and GT.
    Similarly, KKR will play 2 matches each with MI, RR, DC, LSG, and SRH. 1 match each with CSK, RCB, PBKS, and GT.

Venues:

This season, home and away advantages will be negligible for most of the teams. Because of the restricted number of venues. A total of 4 venues are chosen in 2 cities: Mumbai and Pune. Mumbai will host totals of 55 matches and Pune 15. The official IPL schedule will tell us more.

  • Every team will play 4 matches each at Wankhede and DY Patil Stadium.

This format of IPL 2022 is similar to the 2011 IPL season. There were 10 teams in the 2011 season and league matches were similarly played. This season of IPL 2022 is scheduled to begin on 26th March 2022 and will end on 29th May 2022.
