Florida Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad suffered a gruesome leg injury in their game against the Dallas Stars on Sunday. He had an awkward crash which caused his knee to bend before he screamed in pain, via Super Sports News.
After the incident, Aaron Ekblad was taken off the ice with a stretcher midway through the game. Without their star player, the Panthers still managed to hold onto their lead as they cruised to a 4-1 victory against the lowly Dallas Stars.
With their latest win, the team further improved to a 22-9-4 record to nab the third spot in the Central Division standings. Meanwhile, the Stars continue to plummet with an 11-12-9 record to settle in the seventh place of the same division.
After the game, Panthers head coach Joel Quenneville said that Ekblad will be ruled out indefinitely as he recovers from the injury. A Panthers player in winger Jonathan Huberdeau also expressed his thoughts regarding the incident involving his longtime teammate.
“It was pretty tough,” Huberdeau told reporters after the game … before adding, “You hear him scream too. I mean, it must have hurt so bad.”
The looming absence of the former top overall pick will certainly be a huge blow for the Panthers as he is currently leading the team in total ice time this season. Florida's other defensemen in Radko Gudas and Markus Nutivaara will certainly have to step up in light of Aaron Ekblad's absence in order to keep the team afloat in their coming games.
