Atlanta’s center was upgraded to questionable for their 7:00 pm EST tip Sunday, and now the team says he’s a game-time decision. <a href="https://twitter.com/KLChouinard/status/1518244725937131521">In a Twitter post</a>, Hawks.com writer Kevin Chouinard said the status upgrade came directly from head coach Nate McMillan.</p><p>The Hawks dropped both of the series’ first two games in Miami. On Friday, Atlanta cut into Miami’s lead with a one point victory at home in Game 3. The Hawks can level the series at two games a piece with a win tonight.</p><p>Capela <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/hawks-news-clint-capela-helped-to-locker-room-after-scary-knee-injury/">hyperextended his knee</a> in the Hawks’ play-in game win over the Cavs on April 15th. Capela made the trip to Miami with the team for the first two games of the series. But he didn’t suit up for the two Hawks’ losses. On Saturday, during a portion of the Hawks’ practice open to media members, Capela looked more like his normal self. <a href="https://www.ajc.com/sports/atlanta-hawks/hawks-clint-capela-finishing-through-contact-dunking-in-practice/MUQ6AEX7YBANVDR5AXBX4CMQXI/">According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution</a>, Capela “was running up and down the court, catching lobs, dunking and also finishing through contact,”</p><p>While Capela may or may not play tonight, Hawks’ fans can take solace in the fact that their team’s center looks poised for a return at some point during Atlanta’s first round series. That means he’ll be absent for at least Games 1 and 2 of the Hawks’ playoff series with the Miami Heat.</p><p>That’s certainly brutal news to a Hawks team that has been relying on Capela to man the paint. He is a monster double-double machine who put up 11.1 points and 11.9 rebounds per game during the regular season, all while averaging 1.3 blocks.</p><p>As mentioned, however, Collins could return in Game 1 against the Heat. The MRI results revealed no “structural damage,” and he will be evaluated again in a week. As a result, he was ruled out of the contest completely.</p><p>After the game, many Hawks fans were wondering about Clint Capela’s status. After all, he is their starting center, and missing him in a series against an All-Star center in Bam Adebayo is unideal. While there’s no official information on Capela yet, the manangement believes that there is no significant damage to his knee. The Hawks fell flat against the Cavs to start the game, going down by as much as ten points. Stronger teams like the Heat will hold on to their leads better than Cleveland did in this game. When that happens, the Hawks need to have a clear gameplan against some of the top coaches in the East.</p><p>Aside from Capela, the Hawks also sat out John Collins due to an injury. Luckily for them, Danilo Gallanari stepped up to the plate for them and gave them huge minutes. As a result, the Hawks center hurt his leg on the play. Despite the unfortunate injury, the consensus on Twitter seemed to be that Capela should’ve been called for a Flagrant 1. The center really <a href="https://twitter.com/ESPNNBA/status/1515130508585316352">didn’t make a basketball play</a>, although his injury likely helped his case in avoiding said punishment.</p><p>The play as a whole ended up being crucial, as Capela missed the rest of the game due to <a href="https://twitter.com/MarcJSpears/status/1515131991238197252">right knee hyperextension</a>. Currently, a Flagrant 1 foul is defined as “unnecessary contact committed by a player on an opponent.” After watching the play on replay, it’s obvious Capela’s actions should be deemed “unnecessary.”</p><p>James’ frustration is highlighted by the inconsistencies in how those plays are called by referees. It’s something that’s been at the debate amongst fans, coaches, and players for a few years now.</p><p>James tweeted this in the midst of the Hawks-Cavaliers Play-In game. His Lakers failed to reach the postseason, leading to him watching the playoffs from his couch for the second time in the past four years. It’s clear the NBA has an issue on their hands though. Growing up as a black person in Switzerland to parents that immigrated from Africa, Capela says one of the biggest differences between his home country and the United States is the amount of racism he has had to put up with.</p><p>Although the USA is not perfect when it comes to race, and no country is, they are still more advanced as a society when it comes to diversity than our Swiss brethren. Capela opened up on how racism affected his upbringing and what his move to the U.S. did for his mindset in an article with <i><a href="https://theundefeated.com/features/hawks-clint-capela-a-black-person-has-a-voice-and-were-all-human/">The Undefeated</a>, </i>stating:</p><blockquote>“Racism really affected me and I really learned that when I got here in the United States. Obviously, when you’re over there [Switzerland], you think that it’s normal because you don’t know better. A Black person has a voice, and we’re all human. And the way that I grew up wasn’t always like that. I didn’t necessarily understand why. It’s part of it, I guess. And when I was little, as a kid, you just don’t understand. Obviously, you hear the N-word a lot.”</blockquote><p>Capela came to this country as a 20-year-old in hopes of a great career in the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/biggest-need-the-hawks-must-address-at-the-2022-nba-trade-deadline/">NBA</a> and more importantly, acceptance as a black man. He also chimed in with 2 blocks per game, nearing the top of the league in that department as well.</p><p>Capela really flies under the radar in the landscape of the NBA but the Hawks know how critical he is to the operation for the team to succeed in the long run.</p><p>An extension made sense for both parties involved and the Hawks now have their trio of Young, Collins and Capela locked in for years to come.</p><p>The next step for the Hawks is getting over that final hump in the Eastern Conference. Sure enough, Capela will be giving it a go in this crucial contest. The Hawks are tied with the Bucks at two games apiece, and Giannis Antetokounmpo <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bucks-news-giannis-antetokounmpo-out-game-5-hawks/" rel="noopener">will not be playing due to his knee injury.</a></p><p>The Hawks center suffered the injury late in the dominant Game 4 victory when he got whacked in the face by Bucks reserve Sam Merrill. Capela probably shouldn’t have been out there at that point, so Atlanta is lucky this injury didn’t turn out to be more serious.</p><p>Capela has been the Hawks’ defensive anchor in the middle all season. He had one of the most productive regular seasons of his career, including leading the NBA in rebounding with 14.3 per contest. The big man also had 15.2 points and 2.0 blocks per game.</p><p>While it seems Capela will play in Game 5, the word isn’t yet in on Trae Young. The Hawks star point guard missed Game 4 because of his ankle injury, and he’s currently questionable for Thursday’s game.</p><p>Atlanta dominated Game 4 even without Young, so him not playing wouldn’t be a death knell for them, especially with no Giannis suiting up. Losing the defensive anchor late in a blowout win would be a brutal blow for Atlanta.</p><p>This series — like these playoffs in general — has become all about injuries. Hawks star Trae Young missed Game 4 with a foot injury, and then Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bucks-news-giannis-antetokounmpo-suffers-scary-knee-injury-vs-hawks/" rel="noopener">suffered a nasty-looking knee injury</a> during the contest. Then Capela got hurt as well. Bogdan Bogdanovic was also dealing with an injury earlier in the series.</p><p>Out of all these, The Greek Freak’s injury seems to be the worst, so the Bucks are just hoping for the best with him at this point. Young’s status isn’t clear either for Game 5, though, so there’s a chance both teams will be missing their best player.</p><p>As for Capela, he has been huge in the middle after the Hawks acquired him last season from the Houston Rockets. He’s the focal point of their offense on a nightly basis and the catalyst of their success.</p><p>Big man Clint Capela, who has been in the league for many years, has been very impressed with Trae. While he applauded the Hawks superstar, he also just low-key fired a shot at former teammate James Harden.</p><blockquote>“I’ve seen a lot of players just retreat whenever they get on this stage,” said the Hawks center, <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/breakingnews/surprising-hawks-young-playing-like-championship-contenders">via AP</a>. “What I see from him is so much confidence, fearless, attacking again and again. It’s really contagious on our team.”</blockquote><p>So, did Capela basically just say that Harden backed down on the big stage during their time with the Houston Rockets? It certainly sounds like it. In case you forgot, Capela and the Beard reached the West Finals in 2015 and 2018 with Houston. That’s kind of a bold statement from the Hawks big, especially considering that Harden is arguably one of the best players to ever put on a Rockets uniform.</p><p>As for Atlanta, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/atlanta-hawks/schedule">they head into Game 2 of the conference finals</a> on Friday night against the Milwaukee Bucks with a 1-0 series lead. Young is coming off a ridiculous 48-point performance in Game 1 and will be looking to wreak havoc once again.</p><p>As for Capela, he probably didn’t realize he put down Harden. After all, he ended up getting the call he wanted.</p><p>Capela came out after Embiid’s Game 4 struggles and insisted he knew how to wear him down and tire him out, although now Embiid has turned it around and dominated from start to finish. So, perhaps Embiid saw Capela’s comments and found a way to overcome the tough injury to dominate and lead his team once again.</p><p>The Hawks were shocked at the call, and Embiid got what he wanted. The MVP <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-news-joel-embiid-gets-troubling-injury-update-from-doc-rivers/">runner-up</a> dropped 31 points with 11 rebounds through the first three quarters as the Sixers held a 20-point lead comfortably throughout the game.</p><p>Game 6 is headed back to Atlanta and the battle between Capela and Embiid will be one to keep an eye on, especially with both team’s seasons on the line.
