There are several reasons why former NBA players have chosen to play for the BIG3. Some of them want to have another shot in the NBA, others just want to play basketball, and so on. But for former Miami Heat point guard Mario Chalmers, it's different.

Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald recently caught up with Chalmers, whose 3-Headed Monsters will be playing in Miami on Saturday. The two-time champion said that one of the reasons he opted to play in the 3-on-3 league is to stay in shape.

“It’s just a way to stay in shape and keep playing basketball,” Chalmers said. “It’s a chance to compete with guys who you once looked up to that played in the NBA or guys who you competed against in the NBA and are still competing now. It’s just good to link up every weekend and play.”

Chalmers hasn't been in the NBA since the end of the 2017-18 season. He spent the last year playing overseas, and he returned to the US to suit up in the BIG3. He said he wants to play at least one more season in the NBA, but he emphasized that it's perfectly fine if he doesn't.

The 33-year-old veteran guard was selected with the 34th overall pick in 2008. He spent most of his NBA career playing for the Miami Heat, which he helped win two championships in 2012 and 2013.
