The Boston Celtics apparently have huge plans for Marcus Smart this coming season amid the signing of point guard Dennis Schroeder. The feisty two-way guard signed a max four-year extension worth $77 million and, as it stands, it seems that Smart will be getting the starting nod over the former Los Angeles Lakers starting guard.

According to Stadium's Shams Charania, part of Smart's re-signing is that the assumption that he will be taking over the reins as the C's main playmaker moving forward.

“I’m told Smart is slated to become the starting point guard for the Celtics this upcoming season,” Charania reported (via Stadium). “He's become the heart and soul of these Celtics. A culture setter, a leader around the team. And this extension now solidifies his future in Boston.”

The 27-year-old averaged career-highs last season in his seventh year in Boston, averaging 13.1 points per game including 5.7 assists behind former Celtics point guard Kemba Walker. Though he's started the past few seasons for the Celtics, he's mainly been a two-guard, and his opportunities to really call the shots and make plays for his team were few and far between.

He did have stretches when he had to play point and, based on his new potential role, it seems that Brad Stevens and the rest of the Celtics' front office liked what they say in Smart leading the pack.

Schroeder, on the other hand, struggled all of last season in his lone year with the Lakers. He did thrive as a backup PG with the Oklahoma City Thunder which could probably be the main reason for this move.
