Formula 1 star Lewis Hamilton reveals truth behind wearing Breonna Taylor shirt on podium

Formula 1 Lewis Hamilton

Seven-time Formula 1 champion and Mercedes star driver, Lewis Hamilton, reveals the truth behind his decision to wear a Breonna Taylor Shirt on the podium.

Amid talks and issues around Breonna Taylor’s death, Lewis Hamilton decided to wear a shirt stating ‘Arrest the cops who killed Breonna Taylor’ in front, with a picture of her on the back, including the phrase ‘Say her name.’

After bagging the race win last year, Hamilton wore the shirt on the podium— gaining everyone’s attention within the track. The British star shed some light on what he was feeling at that moment.

“I get these nerves like, ‘Shoot, I’m about to break the rules and people aren’t going to be happy with it”.

Hamilton also recounts how the FIA changed the rules of what drivers can wear after his action.

“Well, they’ve changed a lot of rules after a lot of things that I’ve done.”

As the first Black driver to successfully join Formula 1, Hamilton shares the truth on what inspires him across his journey as a seven-time world champion.

“My dad and I would watch people like Tiger [Woods] who kind of broke the mold, and we watched in admiration. The Williams sisters also did the same,” he says. “We’re like, ‘Oh, if we could do something like that, that’s going to help change the industry moving forward.’ ”

“We had things thrown at us, particularly a lot of words, but my dad said, ‘Do your talking on the track,’ because I’m a fighter. I got bullied at school, so I always wanted to be able to defend myself, or fight back, but my dad’s like, ‘Do your talking on the track.’ “

Today, Hamilton has a chance of winning his eighth Formula 1 championship but has to get past Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who currently leads the standings with just five races to go.
