This month alone, basketball fans have had to deal with a number of injuries to major stars, such as LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Joel Embiid, and Anthony Davis. Just this week, another big name was added to this list, to the detriment of card collectors everywhere – Charlotte Hornets super rookie LaMelo Ball.

Recently, Ball fractured his right wrist when the Hornets faced off against the Los Angeles Clippers. Although there is a strong chance the rookie will come back, granted Buzz City makes it to the playoffs, his value in the card market has already taken a hit. We take a look below at the damage done to Ball’s card prices and what investors should do about it.

How are LaMelo Ball rookie cards holding up?

We take a look at Ball’s best rookie card in the market at the moment – his base 2020-21 Donruss Rated Rookie offering. At its peak, the said card reached a high of $275 right when Panini released their Donruss set at the start of March. It settled on a price range of $60 to $80 a few weeks later.

Right after Ball’s injury last Sunday, his Donruss rookie card fell. An auction that escaped everyone’s attention on eBay even had the card falling down all the way to being basically stolen for $0.99. (While obviously a one-off sale, the fact that a LaMelo Ball card fell through the cracks points to waning card interest.) Currently, it has settled in the $35 to $45 price range.

As can be seen from the numbers above, Ball’s value in the market fell down. With the latest news that he might make a comeback at some point this season, there remains a hope that his cards will stay steady at their current price and slowly climb back up soon.

What should card fans do with their LaMelo Ball stock?

Those who invested in LaMelo Ball rookie cards shouldn’t fear. He has already shown a lot of promise this season, leading many to believe that a long and fruitful career is waiting ahead for the young star. This price dip is only temporary and Ball’s value will go up again once he returns this season or the next.

For those who are not holding any LaMelo Ball stock yet, now is the best time to enter his market. As stated before, this price dip allows people to buy Ball’s rookie cards at an affordable value. Overall, there’s never going to be a better time to hoard cards of the league’s top rookie than now.
