The Toronto Maple Leafs entered the 2023-24 NHL season among the favorites for the Atlantic Division. They saw a lot of organizational change over the summer, but hope still remained. To be fair, they haven't been bad necessarily. However, they haven't been great either. And they currently sit in fifth place in the Atlantic Division.

General manager Brad Treliving took over in the summer for Kyle Dubas. He made the team's additions and subtractions over the summer. While Dubas built the core, a lot of the inconsistency can be traced back to moves made by Treliving.

On Monday, the Maple Leafs general manager stated the obvious. “We've been hit and miss,” he said, via NHL.com. “There's been some inconsistency in our game, which is a little concerning. It's an area we'd like to clean up and improve upon.”

Toronto had enjoyed a nice four-game winning streak recently. They even picked up wins over their division rival Detroit Red Wings in Sweden. Now, though, they have lost two straight games.

Prior to that four-game winning streak, though, was a rough stretch. The Maple Leafs lost four in a row and five of their last six prior to the winning streak. Runs of play like that ultimately hurt Toronto's chances of making the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

And make no mistake, that is still the team's goal. Toronto has one of the more talented core groups in the league. Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, William Nylander, and John Tavares are all stars in their own rights. Falling short of the playoffs with these guys on the same team would represent an abject failure.

The Maple Leafs need to find consistency in their game, and soon. Their next chance to right the ship comes on Tuesday when they face off with another division rival in the Florida Panthers.
